Aerosols on land area were collected in Borneo in 1987. Particle morphology and their reactivity with vapor-deposited calcium thin film were observed by electron microscope. Sulfate or sulfuric acid aerosol were predominant in the fine particle size range. Sulfuric acid aerosol was predominant over the North Pacific Ocean, over the ocean near Antarctica and in Breid Bay (Antarctica), whereas ammoniated sulfate aerosol was predominant in Borneo and over ocean near land. The degree of ammoniation of sulfate aerosol was negatively correlated with the distance from land. Small non-acid aerosols in the Aitken particle size range occasionally coexisted with sulfuric acid containing aerosol over the ocean.
