The interstellar material would encounter the nebula at nearly the free-fall velocity, and would have very great kinetic energy. Dust particles falling through the nebula would dissipate their mechanical energy as heat, as they experienced aerodynamic drag in the nebular gases. Heating and deceleration are calculated for a simple infall model. It is found that 1-mm dust aggregations falling into the present zone of the terrestrial planets would be melted, and would cool at ∿350K/hr.
