Using spectral analysis, we isolated several patterns in the mandible acceleration data. The shorter, un-attenuated signals are thought to represent feeding. The longer, attenuating signals are thought to represent vocalizing activities. The depth data suggest that one seal dived under the base of the iceberg. During these dives we detected a unique type of feeding signal. These signals were characterized by patterns of low amplitude and irregular peaks. A second signal type, characterized by a larger amplitude, was observed 75 times at depths shallower than 60 m. The number of feeding signals per dive was higher for iceberg associated dives (>60 m, 11.3 signals/dive) than for dives to midwater depths (<60 m, 0.5 signals/dive). Our results support the hypothesis that underwater surface of icebergs serves as a habitat for marine fauna. We recorded the first vocalization related signals in seals using a mandible accelerometer. One seal spent significantly more time in shallow water and foraged less than the second seal. This seal also vocalized more often (135 events) than the second individual (29 events), possibly due to an emphasis on mating behavior., 海洋生態系の理解のため、顎加速度計によりウェッデルアザラシの採餌行動を明らかにすること、先行研究で示された棚氷下面での採餌ついて検証することを目的に実験を行った。ウェッデル海アトカ湾棚氷部において3個体に顎加速度計を装着し、2個体から2昼夜のデータを得た。氷山下面に潜水したアザラシの潜水底部で複数ピークの小さい振幅波形タイプ(231回、11.3回/dive、>60m)、中層では大きな振幅波形タイプ(75回、0.5回/dive、<60m)が採餌として記録された。ウェッデルアザラシは積極的に氷山下面を利用し、小型無脊椎動物を採餌していることが示唆された。また鳴音行動に関係すると思われる減衰を伴う波形も検出された。}, pages = {309--316}, title = {Fine-scale feeding behavior of Weddell seals revealed by a mandible accelerometer}, volume = {4}, year = {2010} }
