During the MASFLEX (Marginal Sea Flux Experiment in the West Pacific) which aimed to evaluate possible sinking of atmospheric carbon dioxide, seasonal variations of primary production, new production and consumption of organic material were examined. Primary production was, on average, three times higher on the shelf than in Kuroshio area, whereas high seasonal and local variability was observed. Community respiration was active on the whole, and occasionally exceeded gross primary production, particularly during the stratified period, indicating that high mineralization activity proceeded through heterotrophic activities. Although nitrate uptake was higher on the shelf than in Kuroshio area, regenerated production tended to be higher than new production in both areas.
