We present initial results of the HF radar observations at Syowa Station, which started its operation in April 1995,as one of the SuperDARN radars. We give results for 30 days in September 1995,when the radar took the data under good operational conditions. In the analysis we use the SMR (summary) data which was obtained on a beam aligned in the geomagnetic north-south direction. During quiet periods, the echo regions show a pattern similar to a quiet auroral oval, indicating that most of ionospheric irregularities are caused by an auroral particle precipitation and/or strong electric fields. As the geomagnetic activity increases, the echo regions expand to lower latitudes and the velocity amplitudes increase. In general, the Doppler velocity pattern clearly shows a two-cell convection.
